Our engagement with women will transform how they see themselves and the role they should play to reverse how they experience life in their city. An LWL Alumni, Eva, had a tough childhood; as a Lebanese refugee, she was placed in a school for special educational needs and racially bullied. She lost her father at a young age and finished school with no qualifications. Despite these difficulties, Eva went on to attain a Fine Art degree. Unfortunately, this did not mark an entry into the world of work. She joined LWL in 2013, feeling desperate after unpaid placements and short-lived jobs.
A year later, at a Fashion show in London, Eva introduced herself as a new Fashion Designer. “I had been on the verge of giving up,” she explained, “but the Director of LWL told me I was talented and that I could go somewhere if I believed in myself. And now I’m here.” Getting “here” was made easier for Eva as she learned about the power of networking. As a winner of ‘Ladies’ Den’, Eva was awarded six months of business coaching. Since, she's won free studio space and sold her work.
It's become clear the LWL programme is the best way of empowering young BAME women to achieve financial independence and transform their life chances over the longer term. An LWL graduate said: “This really hasn’t been just about employment, it’s something bigger and has made me see myself as bigger.”
Each sponsored place on LWL is worth £3,500. Can you help towards the cost of a place? Thank you for your support.
